Ho Fan  何藩 pinyin He fan

Member of the Royal photographic Society and the Royal Society of Arts, England.
Honorary Member of the Photographic Societies of Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France,
Germany,  Italy, Singapore.
 

1931

Ho Fan  何藩  ( 1931-2016 ) was born on October 8 th, in Shanghai and grew up 

 

in Guangzhou  China.

   

1944

His father gave him a Rolleyflex twin-lens camera, for his birthday, which played

 

a determining role in his life.

   

1948

He moved with his family in Hong Kong.

 

He began taking photographs of Hong Kong through its markets, and streets.

   

1961

He joined Shaw Brothers Studio as an actor and later as an assistant

 

in the movie : The Swallow.

   

1964

His first short film Big City Little Man, won the Honor Award Cetificate,

 

at the JapanInternationa Film Festival.

   

1958/1965

Eight times, he was named one of TheTop Ten Photographers of the World,

 

by the Photographic Society of America.

   

1969

He directed various studios in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

   

1980/1986

As Visiting Professor, he taught the art of Film-making and photography,

 

in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

   

1995

Giving up film as an actor and production manager, he joined his family,

 

in San Francisco United State,  and decided to resume his negatives from

 

Hong Kong .

   

2014

Simultaneously, he exhibited Hong Kong Memoir  in the United States at Modernbook

 

Gallery in San Francisco, and in China, at AO Vertical Space, in Hong Kong.

   

2015

He received The Honorary Award for his entire career.

 

That same year, he returned to his archives in search of unpublished works.

   

2016

On Sunday, June 19, in San José, he passed away from pneumonia, at the age of 84.

 

 

2017

Publication of Portrait of Hong Kong, a collection of unpublished images of Hong Kong

 

from the 50s and 60s, cropped by the artist shortly before his death.
