Any great syory is about a route or duality.  Zao Wou-Ki's  incorporates both. Has a young figurative painter
he was Paul Klee's friend and the landscapes he painted then were bathed in din light. In those little prexious
water colours the world was contained in a nutshell. One witnesses the figurative representation of the world
gradually fading into signs whish were swept away in turn by the gesture and inspiring forces in the visible as
well as the invisible. To this day this is the significance of his art. .

Duality between two different cultures. First, he exorcises the idea of exile in order to expel any link to exoyicism

and become definitively free. Zao Wou-Ki could very well share corbet's remark : " he swims deftly across rivers

where other classical painters drowned ".

Duality in intensity finally, because within the same period of time he alternately paints works where violence

and the earth are vigoorously expressed while in others silence and meditation prevail. Some suggest tigers

others babbling brooklets. Therefore in Zao Wou-Ki's paintings, no matter what the period or the size may

represent, the fracas or silence, paper or canvas, the painter as a lookout sentry does know that the quality of

a work is first and foremost based upon what he would not concede. May this short journey through the last fifty

years whisper in our ears what great painting should be : an insubordinate kingdom.
